Scotch, Scot, Scotsman

Scotch, Scot, Scotsman
Scotch is commonly used to refer to (1) the people of Scotland, but this application is correctly used only with a preceding the (the Scotch, the Scotch people); (2) whisky distilled in Scotland from malted barley; (3) any of several English dialects spoken in Scotland. Scot, Scotsman, and Scotsmen are the terms preferred in Scotland; Scotchman is considered incorrect and offensive there. Scots and the Scotch are widely used plural forms. Scot is not an adjective; Scottish and Scots are preferred adjectives, but Scotch is entrenched in such terms as "Scotch whisky" and "Scotch broth."
